Slice of Life Post for March 12, 2023

It’s Sunday and tonight the Oscars will award some person who is probably already preparing to receive an incredible honor for their acting or skills with creating movie magic.

I personally love to act. I love changing my voice and trying to capture a dialect. One of my favorite stage roles was playing the Wicked Witch of the West while a senior in college. I roller skated onto the stage in a black dress with red flames and a multi-colored wig. “Help, Dorothy to Emerald City, will you?” I cackled. Wow, I can still smile recalling that wonderful opportunity to give my all to a character role. My director, Kathi Pudzevellis, was an amazing woman who cast me in the lead role as a freshman in Everybody Loves Opal, my best-loved character. Those were the days. Ahhhhh!

Acting is truly a passion of mine, but I haven’t been on stage or done any performances for quite awhile. However, in two weeks I will compete in a poetry slam so I need to start practicing my acting chops. (LIKE TODAY!!!)

In my dreams, I would love to play a bit part in a huge block-buster movie. I could do the oddball woman in No Country for Old Men who said, “I told you there’s no trailers for rent.” (something like this, my memory is fading, but her voice has not.) Honestly, I keep hoping one of my former students will call me and say, “Hey, Edler, we want you to play this character in our Indie film.” I can always dream, right?

Good luck to all the Oscar nominees tonight. I’m sure I will not be watching, but I’ll check out the results tomorrow and look for the interesting dresses, etc. the attendees will wear.

Barb, I keep learning g so much about you. And even though I have a theater background, too, I get horrible stage freight, so I prefer the backstage to the on stage parts. Do you sing, too? I bet you’re a singer. Like you? I enjoy movies. I wanted to see all the nominees this year, but I did not. Love seeing the dresses, too. I’m not sure if I’ll watch. If I do it will be on a delay to avoid commercials.

I can’t carry a note. The only tune I can sort of do is “These Boots Were Made for Walking.” LOL! My son Alex was an incredible singer, and my oldest son Marcus is quite the singer/entertainer. He is fun to watch.

Barb, how fun. Your blog always teaches me more about you. I love that you are an actor. The wicked witch! What a fun role. You’re Verdon sounds like it would have made Margaret Hamilton proud.

You’re going to do a poetry slam soon. Good for you. All the best on that! I will look forward to hearing about it!

I love this! I laughed at the image of you rollerskating onto the stage, so fun. I am joining you in hoping a former student calls you about an indie film – this feels highly possible!! Fingers crossed!! Please tell us about the poetry slam when you do this – that is brave and awesome.

I will! I’m really nervous about it, but my inner voice is challenging me!
