Slice of Life Post March 20, 2023 by Barb Edler, shameless or shamed poet at large.

I’m a total mess. I signed up to compete at a poetry slam on Thursday night in Iowa City. You might be asking why this old lady would even attempt to do something like this…the answer is…I want to stretcccchhhhhh myself. I also want to support this event as it is connected to the Iowa Poetry Association, and I’m the secretary.

The promotors suggested bringing friends for support. I don’t think so. Why would I want to embarrass myself in front of my friends????? I’ve talked to my husband about going after I told him he wasn’t going, so I’m pretty sure he is not going. Do you see how my brain spins like a hamster on a wheel? Aggghhhhh!

My biggest problem is I haven’t practiced much. I keep waffling about which poems to perform. I do not really write spoken word poems, so I need to revise or pick ones that are a bit longer. Anyway, it’s crunch time. I must decide on three poems today that I need to memorize. Not only do I need to memorize them, but I also need to figure out how to add gestures, voice inflection, etc., and just go for it. I don’t have to win. I just have to be prepared.

Thanks for listening to my slice of life pep talk to myself. I’ll post some photos about the event on Friday. Oh, the horror that waits. (Somebody, please pray for me!)

Your sentence structure really serves to show your nervousness. Thanks for sharing. (And I’m sure you’ll be great!)

    Barb,
Maybe you should turn this post into a spoken word poem about being old and a mess and unprepared at the last minute. Anyway, there’s no time like the last minute time to start getting ready. Good luck,

Oh, Barb! Praying! You will rally, for sure. I’m looking forward to hearing all the good things about the event. You can practice one on Flip today for Open Write!

I am so excited for you to do this! Everything you are feeling is exactly how I’d be, today, if I were you – even the “I’ve talked to my husband about going after I told him he wasn’t going,” – hahaha, I chuckled here. They have such a burden, trying to figure out what we really want and need.

Yes, men must think really hard to figure us out or what we might want. I just did an audio recording on the Flip thing Stefani shared today. I think I need to drop out quickly or practice incredibly hard or pick a new poem or write new poems….arggggghhhhh…what was I thinking?

Barb, you have an enthusiasm and zest for life that I want. You impress me with all that you do – and you learn quickly. You can teach me how to latch on to these activities more. You picked up blogging so fast, and now this – – slamming! Wow!

Kim, you’re way too kind. I have a great deal to learn about blogging and slamming, but I do like to learn and try out new things to keep me from falling into a depressive rut. I really need to carve out some time to better learn WordPress so I can have the beautiful headers, etc.

This is a big way to stretch, but it’s one I’m sure will end up being a fun experience! After all, you will be in good company. I remember memorizing poems for a talent show in my youth–it was fun…and terrifying at the same time. Looking forward to your afterthoughts.
