Slice of Life Post for March 23, 2023 by Barb Edler

Well, I received two rejection letters yesterday. One was for my ekphrastic response to Rattle’s February challenge. I saw the winning poem this morning. “The Rebirth of Venus” by Luisa Giulianetti is far better than mine. No worries because I’ll keep chugging along. As David Lee Murphy sang, “There might be a little dust on the bottle, but don’t let it fool you about what’s inside.”

If you click on the “morning” link above, you can see the art and one of the winning poems. Each month the editor and the artist each choose one poem from all of the submissions to be published. Last month they had 480 poems submitted so I cannot be the only one receiving a rejection letter.

Released from Domesticity, the Goddess’s Nonet

her auburn hair flairs in kitchen air
flowers wreath her giddy power
hips swinging on angel wings
breasts bouncing to the beat
gold spirit dancing
clanging her pot
barefooted,
she’s fire

Wishing all slicers, a wonderful day! Gray and raining here, but I’m going to shine at my Poetry Slam tonight. Well, let’s hope so. I sure hope I can make it to the second round. No matter what, I’m looking forward to watching all the performers and the opportunity to learn from the experience.

Love how you don’t sound rejected! I am admiring- rejected means you’re doing. And reading in the slam as well! I’m so impressed. Thank you for both poems. And for the song lyric- ‘there might be a little dust on the bottle but…” Ha! I’m going to remember that one and use it!

Can I also add, I have a few rejection letters myself, but not lately. Your piece might get me back out there…

    Barb,
I love your nonet but I also love the winning poem and understand why it won. It has a complicated structure.

Good luck tonight. Whatever happens, enjoy the ride. I’ll be thinking about you and can’t wait to hear all about it.

Barb, what a great post! I loved reading Luisa G’s poem, which is powerful. Your nonet too is amazing. In so few words you really made that artwork come to life. Phrases like “her giddy power”, “angel wings”, “breasts bouncing to the beat” and “she’s fire.” Powerful poem! I’m so excited for you at the poetry slam tonight. What a great experience. I’m sure you will have stories to tell! Have fun, most of all.

Barb, I am in awe of your post today. You show us that rejection slips are just a normal day. If we aren’t getting rejection slips, we aren’t going to get acceptances either. I know you will rock at your slam. I am secretly hoping that you record it so we can see. I’m excited for you and wish I could be there.

I’m not recording but if someone does, I’ll let you know. I’m going by myself. May not really know anyone but that’s all good cuz this old lady’s going to surprise them!
