The Element Hotel Downtown Iowa City

I started out my evening with a little hotel happy hour. Free food and drinks. The bread and almonds were fantastic. I thought I needed just a little liquid courage, but just a little. Now for the drumrolll……Yes, success, I’m moving on to the Final Poetry Slam Stage on April 6, 2023, in Des Moines. Woot! Woot!

When I arrived at the venue, I had to draw a card. I drew #8. Altogether ten poets were competing, and the competition was open to twelve poets. I was quite happy that I did not have to go first!

The slam had three rounds. I probably got the worst score for the first poem I performed. I was nervous about yelling out my first line, so I think that slightly threw me off. The second-round poem was a bit shorter, but no big hiccups. The audience loved my last poem, and I actually received several 9+scores and a 10! Out of the four final poets, I received second place. All final four poets are invited to slam on April 6.

I worked hard to memorize each poem, and I did screw up a little something each time, but I think I covered those mistakes fairly well. At the end, I did not think I was going into the final round, but then amazingly my name was called.

Now, I think I might have to write more poems. I learned a bit more about spoken word. Although I am moving on in the competition, I would say I know how to perform my poems, but that I’m not really a spoken word poet. Perhaps in a short time, I can write something that is more like what I heard all the young poets perform. Yes, I was forty plus years older than anyone else which did make me feel really, really old and kind of weird. Hey, I had fun though.

Two of the Judges: Five people judged each round. Not every round had the same judges.
One of the poets moving to the final round is sitting on the left facing the camera. You can see the performance area at the front of the room.

All in all, it was a great adventure. I learned a lot, and now I have two weeks to prepare for the next big event! As my son used to sing, “Somebody Help Me!”

    Barb,
I LOLed at “Somebody help me.” I’m very proud of you, not only for your success but. also for your bravery. I might need to write some spoken word poems. I have one brewing in my mind. I love poetry in performance. It’s what made me love poetry as a teen, Now, what time and where on April 6?

I’ll get back to you. I know it’s at Franklin Middle School in Des Moines. All the 12 competitors from the 4 different slams will meet to compete. I imagine the same rules will apply.

This is so amazing and brave of you, Barb! Thank you for sharing your anxieties – I can only imagine what it felt like to share your voice in this way. Bravo, bravo, bravo! It is so cool of you. I love that you were 40 years older than the rest of the poets – look what a role model you are for them, just fantastic. I am so impressed.

Barb, can I just say I’m so impressed and so proud of you? I applaud you for all the living of life you are doing – – you have started a blog and learned that technology maze, and you’re reciting spoken word poetry. And you’re 40 years older than all the rest. You are an amazing inspiration for us to keep trying new things. I like that you partook of a little liquid courage, even though you didn’t really need it. Sometimes it’s just a great insurance policy, isn’t it? I’m cheering you on.

Barb, I just realized I didn’t get my comment posted this morning. I was at the coffee shop on my phone. I guess I just remembered that I never pushed post. So, congratulations to you, my friend! I’m so impressed that all the other nine were young people. You were brave! And like Maureen said, a role model for the young poets. I can’t wait to hear where this will lead you. Will there be a video made of the finals?
