What I need is a great chick flick. I’ve enjoyed reading reviews other bloggers have shared and since not everyone on TWT was born before 1960, a few younger bloggers might enjoy a few of my old-time favorite movies. Here are a few of my favorites from long ago.

Glass Bottom Boat: Doris Day kills it in this hilarious romp! When she realizes her love interest, played by Rod Taylor, believes she is a spy, she goes all out to play with his mind. Dom Deluise, Dick Martin, and Paul Lynde all have laugh-out-loud scenes. One of my all-time favorite movies.

Yours, Mine, and Ours: Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda meet, begin dating, and then decide to marry. Hey, that sounds simple enough but when you’re blending families it’s far trickier especially if it means joining a total of 18 children. One scene has Henry Fonda’s three sons purposely getting Lucille drunk and what ensues is an absolute hoot. Tim Matheson plays one of the children who plays the role of Doc Mullins in Virgin River.

The Trouble with Angels: Haley Mills, Rosalind, Russell and Binnie Barnes are all terrific actresses in this film about two girls who love to get into some kind of trouble while at a convent to learn how to become nuns. Although there is no romantic love interest in this movie, it is a delightful film full of humor and touching scenes. My favorite Haley Mills line is “I’ve got the most scathingly brilliant idea,” and she most definitely does!

What’s Up Doc: Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal play perfectly together in this rollickingly comedy. Madeline Kahn plays a minor role in the film as Ryan O’Neal’s girlfriend, and her character is hysterical. This film’s dialogue and physical humor are superb. If you’ve never seen this film, I highly recommend it!

Pillow Talk: Oh my, the fun I had watching this movie is beyond description. Rock Hudson and Doris Day are a priceless duo. Rock Hudson’s character oozes male sexuality, and Paul Randall is another actor in the film who is very funny. Of course, Doris Day is as always super cute!

Since You Went Away: This is the one film that is unlike the rest. It is a WWII movie that has several stars including the following: Claudette Colbert, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, and Shirley Temple. Temple is a teenager in the film. The premise is how two daughters and their mother survive during wartime which escalates when the father is missing in action. It’s a tear-jerker! The movie is available on YouTube.

What are some of your old-time favorites?

Barb, I might try to find some of these old movies. (At least I can start with the last one you’ve listed on YouTube.) I had a really good friend in sixth grade who was an old soul. She loved some of these movies–Pillow Talk and Yours, Mine, and Ours–she always wanted to watch them on sleepovers. I still wanted to watch cartoons, but she was the leader. In high school, my favorites were American Graffiti and Rocky.

    Barb,
You really did reach back into the classic movie vault for these titles. I think I’ve seen them all but had not thought about them in years. I have a teacher friend from the Folger who hosts a film group every Tuesday. I participated for a few months, but stopped attending. You might like it. The group watches and discusses Roger Ebert’s favorite classic films. You’ve sparked a lot of movie-watching memories for me today, my friend.

I agree, these are fun old movies. I loved Yours, Mine, and Ours as a kid, have watched it several times. My matchmaking moment earlier this week had me remembering the movie Crossing Delancey (that only goes back to 1988!)…I need to revisit this, I think.

Barb, I watched Glass Bottom Boat years ago and loved it! Doris Day is one of my favorites. I haven’t thought of that movie in years – – so I’m glad you mentioned it. I think next time my husband tosses the remote and asks me to pick a movie, I will pick that one. I still love Breakfast at Tiffany’s even though it really breaks all the rules with Rooney’s portrayal of the landlord….but I also love The Ugly Dachshund with Susanne Pleshette, and it came under the same fire. Hilarious, though, with the dogs.
