Slice of Life Post March 31, 2023, by Barb Edler

After a full month of blogging every day at Two Teachers Writing, I’ve learned a few things.

  1. Having supportive readers is huge. It’s nice to know that someone will read my blog, especially the following people: Glenda Funk, Kim Johnson, Maureen Young Ingram, and Denise Krebs. I owe you the deepest gratitude for sending me positive messages throughout this month. It has been awesome getting to know you all so much better. Your blogging expertise has been a helpful guide to becoming a better blogger, well, at least I hope to be a better blogger one day, and with a classier looking site.
  2. I am always amazed at the commonalities I find between myself and another blogger or even between two other bloggers. I now know a couple of other people who live in Iowa and who are Iowa WBB fans. Several people have shared their own personal problems, their fear of AI, the future, and how difficult it can be to get through a day of teaching. Again, this leads back to having a supportive group of readers to hear your words.
  3. I have yet to learn how to use WordPress, but I still have plans to dig deeper. I know there’s something about headers and footers that I’m missing. I would just once like to change the color of my title or a single word. These skills evade me.
  4. Not everyone you respond to will respond back even if you send them a note most days, they will not respond. They will like your comment and that’s enough for me. Yesterday, my plans went sideways so I wasn’t able to do much responding either, so it is what it is. Life throws curveballs.
  5. Blogging is not so easy. Although I do not feel I struggled to find a topic, I clearly do not have the writing chops other bloggers possess. I realize the value of photography and cleverly crafted openings that invite the reader to laugh, cry, celebrate, or ponder a blogger’s words.
  6. I now have a lot larger “I need to read this” list. I’ve actually gained a deeper understanding of the difference between a bibliophile and a bookworm. I guess I really did not think too much about this difference until reading someone else’s blog. Hence, you can learn a lot from other people’s blogs. I love that!
  7. Blogging has made me have a few regrets. If I had a chance to go back to teaching high school English, I would definitely encourage students to blog. This would be better than journaling since they could read each other’s posts, etc.
  8. One thing I learned is a bit of a secret. I conducted a little experiment, and my hypothesis came true. Hmmm…wouldn’t you like to know, but I’m not revealing this super-secret experiment.
  9. I owe the biggest thanks to Glenda Funk for encouraging me to join TWT. I hope to continue meeting everyone weekly and to continue blogging on a regular basis. (Kim Johnson, I do not think I will be the faithful blogger that you are, but hey, I’m going to try to continue to blog.)
  10. Okay, my final note. Go Hawks! They are definitely the underdogs, but I’m hoping our Iowa Women’s Basketball team can be the David to the South Carolina’s goliaths.

    Barb,
You’re a fantastic writer and friend. Your presence here has enriched this month for me. I’ve come to realize how vital writing is to friendships that grow deep over a short span of time. And I want to know that secret you’re not sharing. I’m also cheering for the Iowa women’s team. Maybe they’ll pull off a miracle on the court. ‘Preciate you!

I really enjoyed reading your reflections and takeaways from 31 days of slicing. The community is definitely what keeps me coming back (well, and the fact that slicing makes March fly by and distracts me from what otherwise feels like a long and challenging month at school!). I would miss all my slicing friends if I didn’t slice this month! I’m no WordPress expert either, but a lot seems to depend on what theme/appearance you choose for your blog. There are also plugins you can download that give you extra functionality and features, but I don’t know how those work! I hope you’ll keep blogging!

Thanks, Elisabeth! I had no idea about the plug-ins. I will eventually work on the appearance of my site but this month has been too demanding.

Barb, this top ten list is so great! I am having trouble believing that you are new to blogging – your posts have been so wonderful, so honest and insightful. I am still wrestling with WordPress – I joined it in August, moved my blog to this new software, and I have been confused daily. I learned a couple new things about how it works during this month – but, I seriously need to sit and absorb all the technical possibilities, and this interests me NOT AT ALL!! (Though I did get my son to come help me one evening…it was commonsense to him.) Anyhow – I wanna know the super-secret experiment!!! How can you bait us like this? lol About that Iowa – South Carolina game…I’m on the fence…I love what Iowa has been doing, Caitlin Clark deserves the win, without a doubt…but I did go to South Carolina for grad school…and they are pretty wonderful, too, for sure. It’s going to be a great game!! Anyhow, I’ll stop blabbering – thank you for all your wonderful comments on my writing this month. It has been so great to connect with you!

Maureen, thank you for always being so kind when replying to my posts. I’m on the same wavelength about WordPress. I just have better things to do, but I must say your site is so attractive. I have often thought…how did Maureen do this so I guess at some point, I will try to investigate further, but it’s definitely not on my priority list. They have South Carolina winning by 11 so I just hope it’s a well-played game for our Hawkeyes, and even if they lose, they can be proud of all they accomplished. We have tornadoes and bad storms coming our way so I must close. Hope to see you soon. Best always, Barb

I can relate to so many of the items on your list. Learning, figuring out WordPress (I’m nervous about giving mine a new look), finding commonalities, ideas… I also wish I would’ve known about this while I was an ELA teacher. It’s okay though. It feels good to have something just for me and that’s what this space has become for me.

Barb, I read your post and then I went looking to check on the women’s game. Oh, my, what a good game. I can’t really watch it, but I’m following a web page with updates 37-37 now! You must be flipping out.

I like the things you learned this month, and more to learn in the future about blogging. I’m going to put a link to an encouraging article called “Bring Back Personal Blogging” https://www.theverge.com/23513418/bring-back-personal-blogging I’m curious about your secret research! Haha!

Now Iowa is up 38-37! 🙂
