It’s the beginning of a new year. Life continues to be a disappointment in many ways, so I’m trying to challenge myself to keep a bullet journal and to write a poem each day since Glenda Funk encouraged me to join the Stafford Challenge.

I’d also like to keep a gratitude journal and intentionally witness and record the beauty in life. This morning outside my window, I can see the sun rising. What a relief since it’s incredibly cold here, and we’ve had a long month of mostly gloomy gray days. The river looks a bit pink, and the trees are laced with snow. It’s a frozen tableau.

When I head off to work, the trees along River Road will be covered in eagles. Yesterday, I finally saw a few cardinals, too, which have been sadly missing. My husband suggested that the derecho might have been one of the reasons we are not seeing many this year.

The first thing I decided to write this morning before beginning my blog post was to write a poem. You will be able to witness my struggle to focus on the positivity, but I like the brevity of this poem.

    Barb,

TS Eliot was wrong. January is the cruelest month, not April. Even w/ the struggles, you have found positivity. You found it in the pink river, the eagles and cardinals, and of course even a poem about cancer takes the ugly and makes something beautiful.

May victory be real. Keep writing, we will keep reading, thinking positively, too, and join you in looking for our beauty to write.

Barb – I agree with Glenda. There is great strength in your words. Keep using them and find comfort. I think there’s another poem in that frozen tableau. Coax it out and let it warm you.

Barb, I’m going to be doing the Stafford Challenge, too! I’m so glad you will be part of the daily writing. I can feel the cold coming my way right through the screen when looking at your photo. Oh, to see the eagles lined up! What a joy, even in the cloudy cold moments.

The snow is beautiful. I also feel the coldness, the hard part of cancer…

I need to check out this challenge.

I hadn’t made the William Stafford connection. I joined the challenge. It connects to how I’ve laid out my students notebooking practice which is derived from Stafford’s daily writing practice. What a wonderful coincidence. Thanks for the push!

I feel the starkness of winter, the starkness of your cancer challenge…all caught up in beauty, peacefulness, noticing. A poem a day and a focus on gratitude – oh my, that feels so healing. May it be so!

Barb, thanks for the idea of the Stafford Challenge. I signed up too. What beautiful plans you have to fight the winter doldrums. I haven’t figured out if/how I can comment on your first day of the challenge poem, but what a powerful reflective piece about your son’s funeral. Oh, my. Insight and love and appreciation for his life pour out of that poem.

Well written and poignant poem. I admire that you are proactive in writing a journal and a poem each day. Well done. You’ll have a wonderful collection at the end of the month.
