This month another slam poetry event is planned. I signed up. I am ready to back out. Writing poetry every day reveals to me how much I struggle to find the right word, message, image, sensory appeal, rhythm, etc. etc. I’ve found myself in a kind of slump trying to balance work with time to write. Many of my poems so far have been found, and I do enjoy the craft of writing, but I have not had many poems I feel like sharing. They’re like ugly flaws I want to hide.

This morning when I decided to rise, the river was absolutely gorgeous. Lemon lights burnished the placid blue plate. Right now, the trees are bare so it’s easy to view it from my living room. Nature is truly inspiring. I couldn’t capture the beauty of this morning’s moment, but I remembered seeing the tree lines perfectly reflected on the river’s face not long ago so that is what inspired today’s haiku.

All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir is an excellent read. It focuses on two teens from Pakistan and how they try to navigate life when the adults in their lives do not protect them. Truly powerful book. I highly recommend it!

I’d say that was some great imagery! Loved the chilly river wake up scene-lemon lights burnished the placid blue plate… that’s poetry!

Barb, I have been writing poetry each day in 2024 and I totally relate to “I have not had many poems I feel like sharing” … I set out to just discover my own limits, my own comfort, and – truly – what I’m even interested in writing about…lol, poetry as self-discovery. What a beautiful scene you witnessed!! Your photo and haiku are both so gorgeous…I love the “igniting moody blue’s” … I can imagine a whole series of poems that are partnered with photos, just so lovely. Thank you for the book recommendation – it sounds powerful! Thanks for sharing.

Barb, I thought of you today. Your poem and that picture is exactly what came up when I had a conference with a teacher who had traveled to Iowa last year and was so smitten with the beauty of the river. I’m glad to be writing poems every day, and while it’s a challenge, I find it’s great brain work for keeping my thinker thinking. I like your short form today, its power, and the photo of that beautiful river.

Your words described my feelings about my writing for the past few months. Your words paint a picture of feeling and nature’s beauty.
