Slice of Life for March 16, 2025 (1:00-1:31 p.m.) by Barb Edler
Sunday should be a fun day. Right? Well, it snowed here. No matter, I will just be lazy! Fun for me is forgetting everything that troubles me. It’s finding time to enjoy a good read, speaking with friends, writing a poem (Hopefully!) and accepting another heartbreak. (Sorry, not going to reveal it here).

My featured photo today is a backyard view I snapped from this morning. The sun is now trying to shine, and it is supposed to be around fifty degrees later today so the snow will most likely disappear by tomorrow. By 1 p.m. today, I will not be packing for the Treehouse adventure as I did yesterday, it will most likely involve something entirely lazy. Hey, we all need lazy days, right?
You may notice that there’s a chickadee on the curved pole in the photograph. Our backyard is always full of birds: cardinals, crows, finches, woodpeckers and we’ve spotted a few robins this winter. We most enjoy the spring and summer when we are visited by the orioles and hummingbirds. Sometimes we do have an eagle below our home but not often. However, we do see several eagles perched in trees along the bluff when heading into town, and we always see eagles when we go to the Southside Boat Club. If you ever visit Keokuk, I highly recommend stopping there because of all they have to offer: cheap drinks, great view, and friendly bartenders.
So yesterday was fun, although a bit too gray. If only we had booked the treehouse last Thursday when it was far warmer but then we would have missed watching our beloved Hawkeyes lose to Illinois and witnessing Fran’s weird technical and ejection from the game. Tomorrow would have been even better as it is supposed to be in the seventies. Such is life when you are trying to plan a family fun trip. Bob’s Ten Acre Woods has marvelous trails to follow and that’s what I most wanted to do. It is a bit difficult to get to the treehouses due to the rugged pathways, but there are wagons to load your stuff onto to help portage your coolers, etc.

The best part of yesterday was seeing how excited my grandson was when he saw the treehouse. He was running all over the place and has now mastered several words that we could enjoy hearing him speak. He’s 21 months old and already looking like he is past the toddler stage because he is getting quite tall and slim. Yes, to grandsons growing happily.
You can get a glimpse of the parking lot and the trail towards the treehouse. They’ve got a way to go yet: up and down. Notice the lack of sun. Bob’s dog, not ours, but what a cutie! The video doesn’t show my grandson’s excitement because this was taken before you can even get a glimpse of the treehouse.
