“Have you seen the yellow mustard?”

“No.”

“I know I have yellow mustard.”

“Did you look in the garage refrigerator?”

“It’s not there. I looked already.”

“Try the honey mustard on the top shelf. It’s good.”

“I know, but I want my yellow mustard.”

Silence.

“It has to be here!”

Silence.

No one is ever going to help me find my yellow mustard. The refrigerator has at least three other types of mustard I can choose from. I must confess, I am a mustard junkie. I prefer Boetje’s brown mustard for many sandwiches, but for a Maidrite at 4:50 p.m., I want yellow! Sigh.

I never did find the yellow mustard. Now, I must resign myself to cleaning my refrigerator realizing I really have no food, but a helluva lot of condiments. Ugh!

inside the cramped recesses
boxes of mushrooms loom
cartons of yogurt grow fungi inside,
beside cartons of cottage cheese
too many leftovers linger like
chicken fingers
somewhere behind jellies, jams, vinegar, ketchup,
pickles, spaghetti, teriyaki, Worcestershire sauce,
mayo jars, too,
a bottle of yellow mustard hides

    Barb,

I love how your poem leads us through the fridge to find the yellow mustard. How did a common condiment used daily end up back there hiding? I also know which mustard I want, but it’s not generally the classic yellow kind, unless I’m eating a sausage. I like spicy brown mustard best.

Just plain wonderful, Barb! Mustard is the one food I have not written about in the quest to write 31 food poems this month. I love your poem for 2-voices, I was reading it aloud and switching off from person to person. I love your ending with the image of a hiding bottle of mustard. I can see him in the shadows. Perfect!

Barb, such a delight! Your internal rhymes really ring out in this poem, singing almost like appearing faces behind other condiments when it’s time for their notes to sing out…..chicken fingers that linger…..shrooms that loom…..yogurt that grows…..it’s fun to see the sound play and the imagine the condiments hiding. This morning, I washed my clear containers in the pantry with high hopes of reorganizing today……(we shall see, since the butterfly garden needs attention too……). You always manage to make an ordinary moment quite magical and poetic.

Barb, I loved reading about your refrigerator. It reminds me of mine, and when I saw the mushrooms loom, I remembered I have a box in my fridge now too. Probably a little slimy by now, but maybe salvageable. The yellow mustard behind all the other condiments. I’m glad you persisted. I like that you have favorite mustards for certain kinds of sandwiches. I would enjoy a Maidrite with yellow mustard anytime!

I’m a mustard kinda girl, too, Barb. Certain things call for certain mustards and yeah, it’s really irritating when you KNOW the right one is there and you can’t find it. Wonderful dialogue and the poem is pure delight (despite fungi). I have to say my favorite line of all is “No one is ever going to help me find my yellow mustard.” It is a true lament!
