I love traveling on the train from Macomb, Illinois to Chicago. The train departs at 7 a.m. and arrives before 11 a.m. A short hike down Adams Street takes one directly to the Chicago Art Museum.

Last Thursday, I did just that with two of my friends. The weather was fantastic, and my friends and I were all eager to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit.

Seeing the Kahlo exhibit was fairly easy. Martha had paid for the tickets prior to the trip. We had to scan the tickets once we arrived and wait for a text to take our turn. The exhibit was held in two rooms, and I was a bit surprised by how small the exhibit was. Had I paid attention to the title, I might have understood this better: “Frida Kahlo’s Month in Paris: A Friendship with Mary Reynolds”.

Fortunately, the exhibit was still interesting. A letter Mary Reynolds wrote was on display which shared her longing for Frida to return. Mary also made several journals that were covered in a variety of skins such as amphibian and goat. I also saw a photograph of Frida with her pet deer and a few of her paintings.

Afterwards, we decided to eat the Chicago Art Institute’s Cafe since we were not wanting to spend a lot of time on lunch. Wow, it was delicious. I ordered a Tomato Heirloom Flatbread that I could have easily split with one of my friends. We sat outside in the courtyard and enjoyed viewing a sculpture.

After lunch, we went to the Writer’s Museum that was located a few blocks away. It was impressive and engaging. I enjoyed playing a game where you fill in a writer’s story with your own words selected from the screen. Players receive points for choosing the exact words as the writer. Everything was arranged beautifully, and the price was a mere $10.00 for students or seniors.

I’ve always admired Langston Hughes poetry.

Of course, we had to stop at Monk’s Pub for a brew before heading back to the Union Station. I need to plan more day trips! Thoughts?

    Barb,

This trip sounds divine. I’m jelly! I love Frida Kalo and love that activity at the Writer’s Institute. I can see doing that w/ students and having wonderful discussions about their choices. Perfect day!

I know want to duplicate this trip – Art Museum – art museum restaurant lunch – Writer’s Museum – HH at the pub. Yet, I may need to plan to fly to Chicago from VA. THanks for letting me experience your rich day by reading your words and viewing your photos!

I am so glad I read you slice. My daughter is moving to Chicago, and I have only been there once to watch her run the marathon. I am excited to visit these few places you just mentioned.

The last time I was in Chicago, the only time, was for the 50th NCTE Convention. It was a momentous gathering, but I didn’t experience any of the cool sites you highlight here. This would be a much better itinerary than seeing “Cloud Gate” (aka: The Bean)

Yeah, the Bean is cool but just okay. I think I was at that same convention.

Chicago is on my list of places I want to visit. Specifically, I want to go to the American Writers’ Museum. Your visit to the art exhibit reminds me that I saw the Frida K exhibit years ago in Atlanta at the High Museum of Art when it was free for teachers. What a fantastic way to spend the day! I love that you can take the train and be right in Chicago.

I need to take advantage of this more often. The American Writers’ Museum is truly nice. You’ll love it. If you decide to go, let me know because I could always meet you there. Maybe we should think about that as a writing retreat place. Not sure because Telluride sounds heavenly!

Thanks for sharing your visit to the museum. It suddenly reminded me of what I can do with my teacher colleagues after our Cafe lunch today, here in Accra. I’m sure I will also slice about my visit. I really would love to visit a Writer’s Museum some day.
